How is NAPLAN performance measured?

ACARA encourages parents wanting further information about their child's results to contact their child's school to arrange a time for a discussion. ACARA does not provide or store copies of student test papers.

How is NAPLAN performance measured?

NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test. Individual student performance is shown on a national assessment scale for each test. Each test scale has ten bands and all year levels are reported on the same scale. Six bands are reported for each year level for each test. One of these bands will represent the National Minimum Standard for students at each year level. A result at the National Minimum Standard indicates that the student demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.

Will I receive a report on my child’s performance?

If your child sits the tests, a report will be issued by your school later in the year. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. The school will notify you when the reports are being sent home. If your child sits the tests and you do not receive a report, you should contact the school. Individual student results are strictly confidential.
For more information, see Student Reports

What information will be provided about student performance?

NAPLAN results provide an important measure of how all Australian students are performing in literacy and numeracy. Individual student performance on each test is shown on national assessment scales from Year 3 to Year 9. Six bands are reported for each year level. The second bottom band at each year level will represent the national minimum standard for students at that year level. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student demonstrated only the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate in that year level. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.

How are NAPLAN test results used?

Students and parents may use individual results to discuss achievements and progress with teachers.

Teachers use results to help them identify students who require greater challenges or additional support.

Schools use results to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.

School systems and governments use results to review programs and support offered to schools.

Where do I get another copy of my child’s NAPLAN report?

Individual student reports are distributed by the school.  You should talk to your child’s teacher or the principal.

top^

Can NAPLAN test results be compared from one year to the next?

Yes. A rigorous ‘equating process is undertaken each year to ensure that results can be compared.  As a result, change in performance of schools and school systems over time can be identified.

How will information be shown on gain in student achievement over time?

The My School website enables parents, educators and members of the community to track school performance over time.  This information is available on the ‘Student Gain’ page of the My School website, and a detailed explanation of this page is available in the Guide to understanding student gain.

How accurate are school results?

The NAPLAN average score for a school is a good indication of school performance based on the students who were tested in the school. The greater the proportion of students tested, the greater the accuracy. The My School website gives indicative confidence intervals for schools with different numbers of students. Confidence intervals reflect the accuracy of the estimates and the degree of confidence one can have in them.

What do the NAPLAN scores on My School represent?

The NAPLAN scores for any given school on the My School website are the average of the results of all students in each test in each year level (eg Year 5 Reading). The higher the number, the higher the achievement of the students in that year level.

How are NAPLAN scores represented?

NAPLAN test results for each domain are reported on a single assessment scale that extends across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Each assessment scale is divided up into ten achievement bands, and for each year level, a different group of six bands is reported.  Band 1 is the lowest for Year 3, Band 3 for Year 5, Band 4 for Year 7 and Band 5 for Year 9. The single scales allow students, teachers and parents to monitor progress across the years and compare results to those in previous years as students advance through school.top^

What is the difference between the NAPLAN Summary and National Reports?

The report of the national analysis of NAPLAN results is released to the public in two stages.

The first stage Summary Report is released in September prior to the distribution of reports to parents. This report shows preliminary results at each year level and domain by state and territory and nationally.

The second stage is the full National Report that includes final results by gender, Indigenous status, language background other than English status, parental occupation, parental education, and location (metropolitan, provincial, remote and very remote) at each year level and for each domain of the test. This report, which relies on more detailed analysis, is published at a later date.

Once the National Report is released, it supersedes the Summary report.

When are the NAPLAN Summary and National Reports released?

The NAPLAN Summary report is released in September each year. The National Report is scheduled for release some months later, generally in December. Once the National Report is released, it supersedes the Summary Report.

top^

How can I get a copy of the National and Summary Reports?

Both reports are available on the NAP website and can be printed and downloaded at any time from this page: National Reports page. These reports can be very large - both in file size for downloading and page numbers for printing and consideration should be given to the need to print full documents. Once the National Report is released, it supersedes the Summary report for that year.

All published NAPLAN results are also available in a searchable format on the ‘NAPLAN results’ section.

top^

Does the NAPLAN National Report contain individual school results?

No. The National Report does not include school level information – this is available on the My School website (www.myschool.edu.au). The National Report contains results by each year level and domain by state and territory and nationally. The report also contains results by gender, Indigenous status, language background other than English status, parental occupation, parental education, and location (metropolitan, provincial, remote and very remote).

top^

When will individual school results be available?

Individual school results are usually made available on the My School website (www.myschool.edu.au) early in the year after the test took place. This timeline is due to logistical and technical processes involved in analysing data from almost 10,000 schools and providing this information in the comprehensive format found on the My School website. Individual school results are not available on the NAP website.

What information does the new NAPLAN results section contain?

The NAPLAN results displayed directly on this section of the NAP website (http://www.nap.edu.au/Test_Results/NAPLAN_results/index.html) provide exactly the same information as published in the PDF versions of the National Reports - just in a more searchable format. It is completely different from and does not replace the My School website - results are not provided at the school level.
