The tests

NAPLAN is not a test of content. Instead, it tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum, so excessive test preparation is not useful. NAPLAN tests identify whether all students have the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for their learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. Students are assessed using common national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

NAPLAN tests broadly reflect aspects of literacy and numeracy common to curricula in all states and territories. The types of test formats and questions are chosen so that they are familiar to teachers and students across Australia. Use the left hand menu to access a selection of NAPLAN tests from previous years. These are provided for teachers and students to obtain a sense of the ‘look and feel’ of the tests and to understand what types of questions are asked.  NAPLAN tests are not tests students can ‘prepare’ for. NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. Students should continue developing their literacy and numeracy skills through their school curriculum because the tests contain questions similar to those that are undertaken in regular classroom learning and assessment.

Please note that not all previous tests have been made available and test answers are not supplied.

A full set of sample tests for public viewing is currently under development and will replace the currently available tests for 2008-to the current year. Tests available on this website are intended for use by parents and teachers to help ensure students are familiar and feel comfortable with the look and feel of the NAPLAN tests. Parents wanting further information about their child's results are encouraged to contact their child's school to arrange a time for a discussion.
