National reports
NAPLAN
The report of the national analysis of NAPLAN results is released to the public in two stages.
The first stage Summary Report is released in September prior to the distribution of reports to parents. This report shows preliminary results at each year level and domain by state and territory and nationally.
The second stage is the full National Report that includes final results by gender, Indigenous status, language background other than English status, parental occupation, parental education, and location (metropolitan, provincial, remote and very remote) at each year level and for each domain of the test. This report, which relies on more detailed analysis, is published at a later date.
2011 NAPLAN results
In 2011, the NAPLAN Writing Test introduced a persuasive writing task in place of the previous narrative task. The change to the persuasive genre was approved by ministers in 2010 following extensive piloting. The new NAPLAN Writing genre was introduced to avoid a narrowing of the curriculum through a disproportionate focus on writing narratives at the expense of other genres.
Because there is a difference in the way the narrative and persuasive tasks function across year levels, a new and additional NAPLAN scale specifically for persuasive writing has been developed. As this is a different scale, persuasive writing scores should not be compared with narrative writing scores from previous years.

NAP Sample Assessments
After the sample assessments have taken place a public report is released providing a national comparison of student performance against the relevant framework. A technical report is also released, which aims to provide detailed information about the conduct of the NAP Sample subject so that valid interpretations of the relevant results can be made, and future NAP Sample Assessment cycles can be undertaken and linked with appropriate information from past NAP Sample Assessments.
